Three sponsored reviews, one expensive mistake, and a lens I still regret.

In 2019, I bought a 35mm f/1.4 based on three reviews that all happened to go up in the same week. The reviews were positive. The lens was not wrong — it was just wrong for how I shoot. I do documentary work, mostly available light, often moving subjects. The lens rendered beautifully in every controlled test scenario and hunted in every real-world one I put it through. I sold it at a $320 loss four months later. The reviews, I later found out, had been written by creators who were sent the lens by the manufacturer before it was available to buy.

I started FramedRight in 2021 because the gap between how gear gets reviewed and how photographers actually use it kept producing the same outcome: someone buys something they read was excellent and discovers it’s excellent for a completely different type of shooting than theirs. The first product we reviewed was a mirrorless body I’d been using for six months. A reader in the comments disagreed with our verdict on the autofocus. He was right. That edit is still in the review, with his name in the footnote.

The site became something more than a side project around month eight, when the newsletter crossed 2,000 subscribers and someone emailed to say a tripod recommendation had saved them $240. By that point we’d established the policy that’s still in place: nothing gets reviewed unless we’ve bought it at retail and shot with it for at least 60 days. No exceptions, regardless of how good the pitch from the manufacturer sounds.

Mission

Every product reviewed on FramedRight is purchased at retail price from a standard consumer channel — no manufacturer samples, no review units, no pre-release lend agreements. Testing runs for a minimum of 60 days and must include at least three distinct shooting sessions under different conditions. A review doesn’t publish until it answers the one question we actually care about: does this change what you’re able to photograph? If the answer is yes, in what direction and under what conditions? If no, the review says so plainly and explains why someone else might disagree.

Vision

Five years from now, a photographer buying a lens should be able to find a FramedRight review that tells them exactly how it performs in their specific shooting situation — not ‘all-around excellent,’ but ‘excellent for documentary work at f/2 in variable light, less so for anything requiring fast-moving subject tracking at telephoto.’ That specificity is what’s missing from the current landscape. The goal is a review archive organized entirely around photographic use cases, not product categories — because the relevant question is never what you’re buying, it’s what you’re trying to photograph.

Six things that shape every review we publish

The 6-Month Return

Every reviewed product gets a calendar reminder at the 26-week mark. If it’s still in active use, the review gains a field-update note. If it was returned or replaced, the review says so — with a return date and the specific reason. Eleven reviews on this site currently carry negative verdict updates that contradicted a positive initial assessment. Those are the reviews we’re most confident in.

Sensor-Agnostic

No single camera system earns loyalty here. Where adapters allow, products are tested across Sony E-mount, Fujifilm X, Canon RF, and Nikon Z bodies to ensure that system-specific behaviors don’t get absorbed into a product verdict. A lens that performs differently across systems is a different product than single-system reviews suggest — and the review will say which system it matters for.

Field Over Studio

Controlled conditions tell you a product’s theoretical ceiling. FramedRight tests in the conditions where things go wrong — bad light, low temperatures, time pressure, uneven terrain — because that’s where gear either earns its place in a bag or proves it doesn’t belong there. Three of the most valuable reviews on this site came directly from conditions that no manufacturer’s spec sheet anticipated.

The Expensive Mistake

Every gear failure gets documented with the same column inches as a success. When something costs $800 and performs like $300 in real-world use, the verdict says so in the headline, not the footnotes. The site has spent roughly $3,840 on gear it’s sold back at a loss — that money purchases the right to a negative verdict without apology, and it’s money spent on behalf of every photographer who doesn’t want to make the same mistake.

Composition as Criterion

The ultimate test isn’t sharpness data or autofocus statistics. It’s whether the resulting photograph works — whether the gear expanded what was possible to frame, or subtly constrained it. Every review asks this question explicitly at least once. The answer shapes the verdict more than any measured metric. A technically perfect result that produces compositionally limited photographs fails the test.

Disclosed Completely

Every affiliate relationship on this site is named specifically: which links go where, which retailers are involved, what commission structure applies. Not a generic disclaimer buried in the footer — a named disclosure on every page that earns commission. When a reader buys something through FramedRight, they should understand exactly what that transaction looks like from both sides. We’ve declined affiliate programs from retailers we don’t trust enough to recommend.

How a review gets made

Product Sourcing

Every product enters the review pipeline one of two ways: purchased at retail with our own funds, or declined. Manufacturer samples, sponsored placements, and pre-release review units are refused regardless of the pitch. The decision to review a product is made based on reader questions and purchasing patterns in the newsletter — not manufacturer outreach. If someone is spending real money on something, that’s when a review becomes useful.

We’ve been contacted by manufacturer PR teams approximately 40 times in three years. We’ve declined 40 times. We maintain a log of these requests and occasionally reference it in reviews when a manufacturer makes claims that contradict our test results.

Field Testing

Testing runs for a minimum of 60 days from first use. Every test includes at least three distinct shooting sessions under different conditions — varying light quality, temperature ranges, subject types, and time pressure. Before a review begins writing, the tester must have a set of photographs taken with the gear that can serve as evidence for the verdict. The photo set is the test log. If the images don’t support a claim, the claim doesn’t go in.

Our most thorough review — the 70-200mm comparison — took 4 months, involved 6 different shooting days, and produced 847 test images. The published review used 12 of them. The rest are archived in case a verdict is ever challenged.

Writing & Editorial Standard

Reviews must answer five questions before they publish: What type of photographer is this for? What conditions does it perform well in? Where does it disappoint, and why? What would you buy instead at the same price? Has the verdict changed since initial testing? Any review that can’t clearly answer all five doesn’t publish until it can. Copy goes through one editorial read for voice consistency before it’s live — not to soften verdicts, but to ensure the reasoning is clear.

We’ve killed two reviews after writing because the test conditions turned out to be too narrow to support a verdict. Both products were eventually reviewed after extended testing. The gap between the initial draft and the published version was, in one case, seven months.

The 6-Month Revisit

A calendar reminder fires at the 26-week mark for every published review. At that point: is the gear still in use? Has the verdict held? Have firmware updates, competing releases, or extended workflow integration changed the calculus? Verdicts that age badly get updated — with a date and a reason. The original verdict remains in the record. Reviews for discontinued products are marked but kept in the archive, because secondhand buying decisions are real buying decisions.

Three manufacturers have asked us to remove negative reviews. We declined in each case. The decline letter is linked in the review footnotes, because the request itself is information a buyer might want to have.
